Bloom is a brief but deeply expressive work for solo euphonium and piano that celebrates growth, resilience, and the importance of community. Originally conceived as a sketch for the middle section of a larger composition for euphonium, the music gradually revealed its own independent voice and was ultimately shaped into a standalone work.
At its heart, Bloom explores the quiet process of becoming. A simple lyrical melody unfolds and expands throughout the piece, evolving with increasing warmth and confidence. Much like a plant flourishing in fertile soil and with proper care, the music reflects the idea that personal growth is nurtured by supportive environments, meaningful relationships, and dedication to oneself and others.
The work is dedicated to Sarah Shearon-Smith in gratitude for her friendship and steadfast encouragement of my composition and performance career.
