Composition Questions

Do you compose with paper and pencil?

Most of the time, I sketch ideas on paper (GoodNotes on iPad), often with a piano or a melodica nearby. After I have a good idea of what the work will become, I import it to the computer, and the work gets fleshed out there.

Which music notation software do you use?

I was a Finale user for almost 25 years, and when they ended support, I switched to Dorico. I’ve been using Dorico for the majority of my work right now. I will often switch back and forth if a collaboration requires me to use it.

Brass Playing Questions

What instruments do you play?

Short answer: Trombone, Euphonium, and Tuba. But I can also make noises on the clarinet and the trumpet. Anything else should be heard at your own risk.

Which Euphonium do you play on?

I play on the XO Brass 1270s and have been since 2016.

Which Trombone(s) do you play on?

I have two Tenor Trombones and a Bass Trombone. I play my Conn 88h most of the time, but if I’m playing something jazz or commercial, I’ll play my Yamaha YSL620. My Yamaha Bass Trombone YBL612 rounds out the herd.

Which Tuba do you play on?

I play on a Dillon music Clone of the Miraphone 1292 in BBb .
